Overview

Hai Kee Seafood Restaurant, nestled within the lively hawker centre at No21, Jalan Badik 1 in Taman Sri Tebrau, Johor Bahru, has established itself as a beloved destination for seafood lovers craving authentic and fresh flavors. This humble eatery, both unpretentious and bustling, offers a vibrant local dining experience that celebrates the richness of Malaysian seafood traditions.

The restaurant’s menu reads like a seafood lover’s dream. Signature dishes such as the Salted Egg Sotong and Hot Plate Tofu showcase the kitchen’s skill in elevating familiar flavors with a perfect balance of spice and aroma. Not to be missed are the Slipper Lobster and buttery, tender Butter Crayfish, which arrive cooked fresh, their wok hei delivering that characteristic smoky essence prized in Malaysian cooking.

Hai Kee’s specialty also lies in its classic crab dishes, including the spicy 辣仔肥蟹 and Chilli Crab, which have garnered loyal fans. Regular diners praise the freshness and quality — the crabs are succulent without any overpowering fishy taste, a testament to both ingredient sourcing and skilled preparation. Additionally, lighter options like Herbal Chicken and Spinach Tofu round out the menu, providing balance and variety.

The atmosphere is informal, with seating primarily in an open-air hawker-style setting. This adds an authentic charm but can mean warmth during sunset hours and a lively, sometimes crowded environment, especially on weekends. Many patrons note waits can stretch over an hour, but the consistent quality and the warmth of the friendly staff make the experience worthwhile. The young, talented chef behind the scenes infuses traditional recipes with passionate finesse, a factor often highlighted by repeat visitors who swear by the restaurant’s reliability and flavor intensity.

Hai Kee Seafood Restaurant attracts a diverse crowd—from local families and seafood aficionados to tourists eager to sample Johor’s coastal specialties. Conveniently accessible via phone or WhatsApp for orders, it caters well to both dine-in guests and takeaway seekers. We’ve been to this seafood restaurant many times, and it has never disappointed. The food is consistently delicious and well-prepared. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the chef is a young chap - clearly very talented! Most of the dishes are excellent. Even simple items like spring onion pork, hot plate tofu, and sambal kang kong are packed with flavor. The steamed Hong Kong-style fish is always fresh, with no fishy or muddy taste. We never skip their crayfish and crab—they're incredibly fresh and flavorful every time. Do note that it can get quite crowded, especially on weekends, so be prepared for a wait. Alternatively, you can WhatsApp them to place your order and pick it up for takeaway, which is super convenient. Highly recommended if you’re craving solid, satisfying seafood!

The food here is incredibly tasty! The seafood and wok hei are truly on another level. The crayfish, prawns, and crab are absolute must-tries — and you can’t go wrong with anything labeled “fragrant” on the menu. The staff are super friendly, making the entire dining experience even more enjoyable. Although the restaurant is a little hidden, it’s definitely worth finding the right spot! A heads-up: the owners and staff did mention that weekend waits can be long (up to an hour or more), but trust me , it’s worth every minute. Before visiting on a weekend, it’s best to check out the menu and start planning (and dreaming about) all the dishes you’re about to indulge in. Highly recommended!

Waited 1.5hrs for my food. Visited on a weekend evening. Crowded popular area, didn’t wait long for a seat. Seafood is the highlight and it didn’t disappoint. Fresh and delicious. Highly recommend the crabs. Worth the penny but only if you’re ready to wait.

Came here on a Saturday around 6:30 PM and was seated at an outdoor table. It was a little warm for the first 15 minutes because of the setting sun, but I had no regrets—the restaurant was completely full shortly after we arrived. Hai Kee seems to be the most popular with with two other restaurants next door. We ordered clay pot fish, salted egg squid , and stir-fried kangkong, and every dish was absolutely delicious. The flavors were spot-on. They accept PayNow, but I recommend paying with cash if you can. The restaurant uses a 3.1 RM conversion rate, which isn't the most favorable. I'll definitely be back for more delicious food!

Crowded. Avoid dinner timing. Overall is good. Staff and boss all are very friendly. Recommend to come. Up to 2hour that day I’m going due to weekend. If you don’t have patient to wait can go for the next stall too. Both are nice tastes. Crab are lives and not expensive overall. The chef is young but the taste is better than other outside restaurants and Zi char. No advertising. But the taste for all food is nicer.

We came here on a busy weekend (bus queues into JB were so long we walked across) so it was no surprise that there would be a long wait for food, considering their popularity. We waited an hour plus for food but let me just say, it was definitely worth the wait! Black pepper crab was fresh and sweet, and the cereal slipper lobsters were so good! Will definitely be back again for more!
